The laser, around 50-100mw hits a black plastic surface. It has just enough power to slowly melt the plastic and produce a puddle. That puddle reflects the beam, and because it is small creates significant defraction rings. The whole figure grows and morphs during the process. Beyer's All Natural Ice Cream lid was used.
