Much like a humming bird, it holds position under the bread, (just joking).

I had left home to photograph ducks. We have a lot of them around campus. While I was taking a few pictures I asked a friend of mine walking by to hold up some bread (duck modeling fee) to get a duck to fly up. This drake was about the third duck up. A hen was first. After they grab the bread they stop flapping and crash onto the heads of other ducks.
